it does that if your router is getting too hot

If your using wireless than its a router problem. Move your laptop to a closer location to the router.

I think your antivirus is not detecting it. But there may be some spyware or virus in your system. Yesterday also i felt some problem like this and my yahoo IM was also showing some indifferent behaviour. I suggest you to try reinstalling your operating system by deleting your primary partition and then recreating it.

Could be some feature in your antivirus software causing this.

Check with your isp that there is no problems with connectivity in your area at present.

also check that auto disconnect  after 20 mins is not enabled in network connections.
