It must be a ghost train you may live next to an abandoned rail line or a train wreck happened there years ago. could you get an  audio recording on You Tube.com so we may hear what exactly  you're talking about? thanks. My cousin told me that in England people have been hearing train whistles even though a railway hasn't ran through that part in years.  One man in Georgia said that there is ghost train where he lives and it has been seen by campers; he says it keeps trying to get to the station and yet it doesn't make it. So yeah it Must be a ghost train.

I don't know about weird train whistles, but in NYC Subway, when subways are late, sometimes they use local track and blown their horns as trains bypass local stations.
