I keep losing my Comcast DVR recordings. What should I do?

I've lost my Comcast DVR recordings for probably the 12th time (I'm not exaggerating) in the past two or three years that I've had to service.

The power went out the other night, so that may be when they were lost.

We're on our fourth box in the past few months, so I don't think getting a replacement will do anything.

What should I do? I just want to watch my recordings!! And on this new box, the % was never over 80%... I kept it closer to under 70%. It's just so aggravating!

  1. I recored "Lost" on Thursday as I didn't have time to watch it then. Now after the Superbowl, I thought I would watch it. Just before starting to watch, I rearranged my my audio system, and while doing that, I had to disconnect the DVR box from AC outlet. After plugging the DVR box back in, all the recordings were gone!!!! Now it shows 0% usage on the HDD.

Man, I hate the box. It wasn't enough that the screwed up the GUI last summer, now it also loses the recording!!!

I wonder if there's any way to get the recordings back? I'd guess no, but you never know...

  2. where you program your selection there is a button that ask if you want to save until you delete that is the one you choose

  3. Comcast DVR's basically suck, they are used and abused until they die, all are recycled from customer to customer until they are fried which is most likely why your have had such trouble in the past. Power loss & outages have a negative effect on the harddrive for whatever reason, make sure you are using a surge protector. At this point, if you cannot get the DVR to save a new recording to the harddrive, then it is fried. if it saves then its working, but your old recordings are lost. After a power loss a DVR can sometimes take up to 24hrs to restore recordings...but if there is nothing in the saved recording list w/in an hour or two of powering up, then you most likely have lost the recordings. If you are stuck with Comcast you have a few alternatives...

    Get another DVR from them

Buy a DVD-DVR Recorded through a retailer, they are going down in price as they get more popular

Upgrade to a Tivo DVR, but go through TIVO not Comcast

  4. With a new machine you will have lost all you recordings.  The recordings are kept on a hard drive in the box not on a server.

Regarding your newer recordings, if you have series recordings you might want to check the options regarding deletion.  Some of the functions save until "Space is needed"
