I live in a basement, I got tired of asking the landlord about the rats making noises every day for the past months, that I finally went out and bought poison for it. Well the poison worked but 1 week later, I noticed the smell, the smell has slowly tapered off but now here comes the maggots! Its been 4 days since I've seen them on the bathroom floor, then I threw some moth balls on the floor and it worked, however, they are crawling into my son's room, last night placed duct tapes on the baseboards to catch the maggots and it worked but they still managed to crawl under it. This morning I found them coming into the living room like 5 of them and now I don't know what to do! The owner of the house does not have money to call in someone to break down the walls because we don't know where the rats are. I don't know what insect spray to buy to kill them, and the basement was fumigated 4 days ago also. I'm nervous to see them get in my room, my clothes, shoes, etc. Pls. help! Thx

  1. I wouldn't be laying down poison, and letting the rats die in the walls again.  That is where your maggots are coming from.  Does your city have a tenants advisory board?  Or how about going to the public health board?  Or finding a safer place to live?

  2. Stay cool, stay strong.  The maggots won't hurt you or your son--the rats would have.  The maggots (and smell) are a good sign that the rats have died.  Your poison worked.  Well done!

The maggots are a nuisance, but will be gone soon, with the (dead) rats drying up there's no more food supply for them.

You may want to set out fresh poison every 4 to 6 months, to pre-empt another rat infestation.  Take it out of what you pay the landlord, and enclose the receipt with your next check.  If he or she complains, tell them the law is on your side and you'd love to argue your case in front of a judge.  They will drop it.

  3. Try this website that I found for you http://www.houseintohome.co.za/pests-and...

    Good Luck!

  4. Just about any kind of bug spray like RAID will kill them.

  5. Threaten to sue the landlord if he/she doesn't improve living conditions. It should be their responsibility.
