  1. Put it in a bank

  2. Yes.  I visited with my husband and children about 3 years ago.  We bought rail tickets here in the US and saved some money.  Stay outside of london.  Walk a lot or rent a bike.  Lots of people do and its a great way to meat the locals.  We made friends who graciously drove us around and showed us their favorite sites.  B and Bs are an awesome way to save on lodging and so are hostels.  I prefer to pay a little more for the b and b.  We picnicked for lunch and sometimes dinner or we ate take out.  Take out is even less expensive than pub grub.  I recommend investing in a Rick Steves guide.  He's on PBS and teaches you how to see Europe like a local and even tells you about great places to stay and eat.  We used his guide and had a great experience in every place we stayed, visited, or dined in from his recommendations.  Have a wonderful time.
