New York City is a hot market for IT talents. I have a Finance and some programming background. Have tried learning pretty much most of the popular languages such C ,JAVA, and even Python. But, with these languages it takes a while to develop GUI applications. I am focussing on .NET technologies. It has some similarity in syntax with C ,java, and one can actually rapidly develop applications. I am learning C# ..Is this a good move? Plus, are there many jobs with Dot Net background in New York City?Your advice and opinions are appreciated.

  1. (hmmm...  looks like Yahoo removed the spammers answers)

Yes, learning C# is a great move. I currently work for a large healthcare corporation, and all of our new development is done in C#. I would think that there are alot of jobs for .NET developers in New York, just as there are out here in the West. I would suggest learning C#, and backing it up with some ASP.NET. That way, you will have a good web development foundation.

You may also want to learn some JavaScript, as it is commonly used to do some things client-side, and save the web server from doing all of the processing. Lastly, it would be a great addition to learn some basic SQL stuff - the main database language. It will make you very versatile, and in IT, that is always a good thing.

Good luck to you : )

EDIT : Sorry if I offended you - actually, when I first answered this question, there were 2 answers already - with links. No help, just links, They were obviously spammers, and I have seen those things popping up alot in this section. No worries - my apologies ; )

  2. It is always a good movie to learn more. It can not hurt. I would look for open jobs in that area and see what skills they are asking for. Every company is going to be looking for different things.
