I know I shouldn't be surprised?

OK you know me- I am a Wings fan. And I am obviously a passionate hockey guy who shouldn't find such things "awe-inspiring", but...

even losing last night, I was amazed at how controlled the Wings play and by how masterful their passing is. I mean WOW! Even on plays they didn't score on, I saw passing that seemed like they were playing against youngsters.

Anyone else have an "awe-inspiring" moment from these playoffs?

  1. game 3 of the stars series, made me realize that the wings had finally figured out how to play playoff hockey.

the 4th and 5th goals. w/ the Stars pouring on the intensity and just providing an offensive flurry, Detroit responded (rather than customarily sitting back), w/ forechecking and offense.

Zetterberg's performance on the 4th (SH) and 5th (assist) goals was impressive. that was the first game that actually showed me that they were hungry.

agreed though about the passing (generally speaking). even the announcers picked up on it. however, sometimes detroit can "over" pass in situations, by making pointless passes and/or not taking a decent shot, in hopes that they'll get the perfect shot and highlight reel goal. (although haven't seen it too much this year)

  2. I was “awe-inspired” during the Wings/Stars series at the back-checking from the Wings forwards. If the Stars hesitated for a second there was a Redwing stealing the puck from behind them. Very impressive.

  3. Even though i'm a diehard pens fan, i give credit when needed so therefore i must say: I will continue to praise the wings on their passing abilities. I wish the Pens could take notes.. pens are good at passing - they just need to work on keeping the puck after the pass.. lol

  4. The Wings didn't have there A game, and it showed. They did show flashes, however there passing was not as crisp. It looked like the the opposite of the first 2 games where again our passing at times weren't hitting the tape as usual and we started to get all scrambly, like chickens with there heads cut off. I think both teams got a away a few calls. Badly missed was the inadvertent Lidstrom stick to the chops.

  5. The Wings are like watching the old Red Army play...sooo fine tuned...so positional...

  6. It's gotta be Nabokov's glove save on Richards, because if the Sharks had won game 6 (the 4-OT game) there's a very good chance they would have won game 7 in San Jose.

hmm Bill, if I'm not mistaken, Campbell is on SJ, not Dallas?

  7. Yeah when I called the Game winner against the Caps in Game 7 OT.Maybe not "awe inspiring" but still made me happy.

  8. I thought so too. The momentum kept swinging back and forth. The commentators would have you believe that Detroit was totally dominated, but that's not what I saw. The Pens played really great for extended periods of time, but the Wings were still able to just move down the ice at will for much of the 2nd half of the game. They could have just as easily stolen that game last night except for a couple of unlucky bounces and a few slip ups. They didn't play bad at all, the Pens just played a little better.

  9. I watched the Wings play quite a bit this season and will say that their puck possesion game is second to none.  I can't comment on this series since I admittantly haven't been watching due to being turned off by the broadcast coverage.  I will say the the Memorial Cup games were quite refreshing and seemed almost pure compared to the NHL.  But the Wings are very skilled.

  10. even though they lost, they dominated the entire 3rd period. they should have won like 6-3

  11. If there is such a thing as an acceptable loss in sports, last night was it. Sometimes you can do almost everything right - or make less mistakes than the other team - and still come up short.

My awe inspiring moment was during the Detroit/Dallas series when Zetterberg handcuffed Campbell and scored. It was beautiful.

  12. I agree, as a Pens fan I almost had a heart attack from the last 4 minutes of that game.

  13. The play by pavel through his legs with a defender draped over him i think, and a split second later it rings off the post from a wide open holmstrom.  i was like, WHOA.

But the heart and determination the pens showed throughout game 3 made a huge impression on me overall.
