how do i go under to avoid bad waves and steer and stuff like that

  1. First of all, make sure you have fins on your feet.  They make all the difference.  I tie mine to my ankles with shoe laces so I don't lose them if I do get pounded.  When duck - diving, hold the top corners of the board tightly, get up on one knee, then try to "shoot" the board under the approaching wave.  You should pop up behind the wave.  You want to try to stay far enough out so you don't have to duck dive too much, but close enough in to catch waves.

  2. To dive under a wave you just have to grab your board, wait until the wave is right on top of you and dive under the water.  Depending on how much you weigh will make it easier or harder.  Steering is just a matter of shifting your weight in the direction that you want to go.
