how does plucking work? is it the same as strumming with chords

well, as a classical player, you are encouraged to learn by plucking and then with a pick. but whatever, that's the formal way.

you should place your ring finger on the 1st string, the middle on the 2nd, and the index on the 3rd.

your thumb will play the rest of the bass strings.

if your reading music, your hand will not move from that position, but if your playing a song, try to maintain composure byu not plucking the 1st 3 strings with the thumb or the  index on the 6th string.
