It's never to early with kids. I would pay close attention to his likes and ask questions. Make sure you get a list of everything he want and try to get it for three present only depending on price you will buy the one he like the most. When I was twelve I use to write a list of four things I really want and then my parents choose. If he still believes in santa you can write you own list and put it on the refrigaretor to encourage him to do so and then pick it up when he goes to sleep.

If I were twelve, I would look at what my interests were, and what kind of interest I would want to develop and get good at.

Do you like an instrument? Ask for that.

Do you like a certain subject, like history or science? Ask for a kit or a book on that.

Don't just ask for stuff that costs a lot of money or wastes time. Ask for something that will either keep you in shape or teach you something. You're 12, there is a whole big world of unknowns for you.. try to ask for something that will teach you things.
