I know nothing about yahoo groups but want to set one up. Will it be password protected and not public?

I want to limit access to only those that I choose. Is this possible?

Yes when you are setting up the group you will be asked if you wish the group to be private or open.  If you choose private that cannot be changed at a later date.

you can make the group's access only to members but keep the froup restricted membership. a close (private) group limits gaining members only via invites, which are glitchy.

if you want the web tools (links, calendar and so on) open to just members, archives to just members, those settings are in the groups management.

there is no password protection- members with a yahoo ID will need to be signed on to gain access
