I know that U.S.S stands for United States Ship. On freighters, what does SS stand for?

My 9 year old asked me this and i really am not positive.I think it stands for Steam Ship. pease help me answer his question

SS stands for "s***w steamer." So this would not be a paddle wheeler or a sailing ship.

you are both correct it is Steam Ship or Sailing Ship, depending on where you are. HMS is the term for British ships winch would be His/Her Majesty's Ship
