  1. The only time large amounts of surface agitation will be of any extra detriment to plants is if you're injecting CO2, either with a DIY, pressurized, or oxidation bar reactor.  If you're usign Flourish Excel or nothing at all, a bubble bar won't make much of a difference.

  2. Probably not. Depending on the # of plants you have, if you have any that require lot's of added CO2, will determine if they will die or not. For well planted tanks, or with plants requiring lot's of CO2,  you should be using CO2 injection, and at the same time using added air stones or bubble bars to help raise oxygen levels in the tank. Best thing to do is get yourself a CO2 test kit. It will be like a cylinder that sticks to the inside of your tank underwater. The liquid inside it will change color to let you know if you have low CO2, enough CO2, or too much CO2. In the case of having too much CO2, you will have to add more airstones to help get oxygen levels back up. High levels of CO2 will suffocate your fish, and can cause the water to become more acidic which is a result of a pH swing, which can be deadly to fish.
