Is there the slightest chance that there could be mer-maids?

And if not how do you know? Give me a reason not to believe that there are mermaids. (A scientific reason would be great!)

thanks ; P

  1. mermaids tale came to life when people found out whales used to be land creatures, and also other animals, mermaids are supposedly a tribe of humans that eventually became sea creatures and were able to breath oxygen and talk, and it went on from there. people have tooken a top part of a monkey and sowed it on a fishes tale just for people to think they are real. but no, there is no chance one half of a human could be fish without us knowing for sure

  2. maybe, its not like we have investiagted the entire ocean, it takes us years just to find where a ship was wrecked anything is possible and there could be a creature that exists, but i doubt it could talk english lol. Good Luck hoped this helped!

  3. Well, the myth of the siren (mermaid) began centuries ago, just like the myth of the centaur which is half man half beast so who really knows what creatures really once existed?

Scientifically, human genes and animal genes can't co-exist in a strand of DNA. It sounds even perverse to say it. Still, I believe that unicorns and dragons possibly existed but as genetic mutations. Still, they are whimsical and beautiful creatures in literature and lore.

Of course, I'm a little disturbed at the implications of what sort of "mutation" came from a cross between a sea mammal and a human being- lol.

    Nonetheless, mermaids (sirens) are beautiful

  4. I think every fable or urban legend has some truth in it, or else why would the concept be there in the first place?

Someone must have seen something for the concept of mermaids to start.

  5. idk im sorry but i want it to be true! maybe look it up on google?

  6. Its physically impossible for a mammal to have s*x with a fish... therefore there would be no possible way for a half-man half-fish creature to even come about.

If you believe there are mermaids, you're just plain retarded. Thats all there is to it.

  7. I believe anything is possible.

  8. A half  human, half fish creature, no.

A mermaid like creature yes.I would think if they existed they would be smaller than what we perceive them to be and resembling a different upper body, but not that of a human.

We know more about the moon then our own oceans, it is a good chance there are creatures like them farther then our technology can go.

  9. As a guess:

Not the Disney-style, half people ones, I think. It wouldn't make too much sense, for half of them not to be covered in scales or for them to have human features. If 'mermaids' did exist, they'd probably look like fish with elongated torsos. However, it wouldn't make sense in their underwater environment for mermaids to exist for long- their large size and clumsy futures would throw them off. And they would probably die off.

  10. You are asking for evidence of non-existance.  That is logically not possible.  It would be impossible to prove that mermaids do not exist just as it would be impossible to prove that 100 foot tall, purple sequoia trees growing on Jupiter do not exist.  All of the evidence suggests that is not possible but you can never trully prove that they do not exist.  You have to focus on what evidence there is of existance.  For mermaids, the best you can do is look at the stories.  Those are not the best evidence.  Stories are too easy to fabricate.  You will need actual physical evidence of a mermaid.   So far, other than some hoaxes, there is nothing in that department.  From a scientific standpoint, mermaids do not exist.  There is no evidence to suggest that they exist.

  11. i think that mermaids are real but only in Greece. because my friends grand father visited there and saw one coming its hair.

  12. I don't think that humans and fish have similar enough DNA to fish to by hybridized with them.

I have heard  that the myth comes from seamen (maybe drunk) were really seeing manatees or dolphins in the distance.

  13. First of all---has anyone NOT seen them?

Who knows?  Maybe some where there are mermaids.

  14. i love mermaids. i saw a sand sculpter at Venice Beach making a beautiful mermaid laying on her side playing with her little baby girl mermaid
