  1. As viphocke said, that won't happen. Partly because Bill Davidson who owns the other 1/3 of Detroit and the Pistons and the TB Lightning, are always competing against one another for customers and bragging rights.  The new JLA is supposed to go behind what is the FOX Theater and Hockeytown Cafe, (both owned by Mike Illitch) up Woodward AVE right across from ILLITCH owned Comerica Park, home of Illitchs Detroit TIgers....the Illitch's own that part of the city basically and ant to keep people down there to use there businesses.  It s all about the cash flow!

Th Palace is the right stadium, but wrong owners...Detroit Vipers IHL hockey and several college games have been played there over the years...Palace is defineitely able to host hockey, just not the RedWings!

  2. I think they should knock down the Old Tigers stadium and Rebuild a new arena there. But, I would rather let them have their own separate arena.

  3. Mike Illitich, the owner of the Detroit Red Wings, wants to keep the Wings inside the city of Detroit.  Currently, he owns a number of buildings along Woodward Avenue in Detroit in a section that the people in Detroit refer to as "Illitichville".   There's still talk about building a new arena for the Wings, since the Tigers (which he also owns) got a new stadium a few years back.   Right now though, the city of Detroit keeps blocking his plans to build a new arena because they feel he's creating a monopoly in that area.  As soon as the zoning issues are addressed, there is talk that the Wings are going to get a new arena, probably near the old Tiger Stadium, which is scheduled to be torn down.

  4. Bill Davidson and the Illitch family dont exactly see eye to eye.

Bill brought the IHL to the Palace and that only deepened the dislike. The Illitches knew he wanted to get his hands on an NHL franchise and own the arena....he succeeded when he purchased the Lightning and the arena there. There is little chance they could come together (although there is a small opening, Davidson did allow Jr. Whaler games at the Palace...Illitch did get along with Karmonos). Plus you need to factor in the seats sold to fans that live in Windsor, moving out of the city with the deep roots and potential fan loss and the Illitch family desire to own the stadium and this scenario just doesnt add up.

  5. You KNOW that they want a new arena?  How do you know that?

That will probably never happen for a lot of reasons.

  6. I don't know if the Palace has the proper set up to host hockey games.  I could be wrong, but that may be why.

  7. They might want one, but Kwame Kilpatrick stole all the money. The Michigan economy and the city it self, I just don't see it anytime soon. I do hope that they get one soon. Nothing against Joe, but its starting to look old compare to some other arenas in the league.

One of the best teams, they deserve a new arena.
