  1. There is no "one way system".

The Vatican Museum is like any other museum.

You wander around any area you like.

The Sistine Chapel is just one area of it.

When you walk in everything is marked directing you where everything is. They also give you a map that you can follow if you want.

Before my trip to Italy I read so many itineraries that suggested doing both on one day. I would not suggest this at ALL!

Saint Peter's Basilica is a far walk from the Vatican Museums. And the lines for either one are extraordinary! I waited for 2 1/2 hours on a rainy day to get in to the Vatican Museums. The lines for St Peter's Basilica are long as well.  I just was there last week, which is considered a "shoulder" season so I do not want to imagine what it would be like in HIGH season (late May & June).

Plus, you will want to spend a lot of time wandering around and soaking everything in. Once you go and see it in person you'll see what I mean. Took my breath away!
