I know this is a personal question, but what discharge is normal after having a baby?

New mommy here--I'm having a brownish-yellow discharge 2 and a half weeks after having my first baby and it has an unusual odor to it. It's not mucous-y but more along the lines of blood consistency but not containing any blood. I just wondered if this was normal or if I should go get checked out at the hospital. HELP!

  1. You are fine.  It is called lochia.  It will last maybe another 2 weeks.  It starts as period like blood and then changes to the brownish/yellowish discharge and then it gradually gets whitish or clear before completely going away.  It does smell a little funny, but it should not have a strong odor.  If you notice large clots or it starts smelling stronger and kind of rotten, then you should call your doc.  For now, just plan on wearing pads or pantyliners for another 2 weeks or so.

  2. It is perfectly normal. I experienced the same thing and was scared. My doctor said it was dried up blood and just normal discharge from the baby. And that it was good that it was coming out. But it was really gross.
