  1. Ive never heard of a french person named Nicole.

  2. Nicole is a fairly common name in France too.

But they pronounce it Nih-coh-lah instead.

    good luck!

  3. That the name Nicole is of French origin does not mean that it will be a popular name in France. There are plenty of names of English origin that are not popular in English speaking countries. A good example is the English name Edith.

The best way to find out the popularity of names in countries other than your own, is by using this internet tool: http://www.babynamemap.com/

I typed the name Nicole into the search engine, and found that while it was incredibly popular in the U.S., U.K. and Ireland. It is common in Australia, Chile and Sweden. Nicole is uncommon in Norway and Belgium.

Interestingly, the name Nicole is uncommon in Quebec, while popular in Alberta, Ontario and British Columbia.

The popularity for the name Nicole in France was not even listed. This leads me to believe that it is currently not a popular name in France.

  4. Sophie is a popular french name or more like Sophia.

I went to france and loads of french people i met (who were girls) were called sophie or sophie.

Hmmmm Not sure about nicole. But that name is popular in the u.k i think.

  5. I know three people called Nicole who are of french origin. My mothers friend is called Nicole and my great aunt and cousin is called Nicole.

    My Mother is french.

  6. Many French names we (English speaking) use today are not as popular in France anymore, the same happens with English and other names, they come and go in fashion. My husband is from a French speaking country and he says Nicole is French. Both our girls have traditional French names, one is quite old fashioned and rarely used in France, today, but is gaining use in English, the other is more common today in France, but was less so years ago.

  7. It's not that common for young children, but was much more popular (in the US and France) for girls born in the 1960's.

According to MeilleursPrenoms.com (translation:  Best FirstNames)...

At the start of 2006, 254,532 French women had this name.

NICOLE is the #13 name most attributed to the 20th century, but was #1,262  (for newborns) in 2006.  It peaked in 1947 in France, with about 16,000 births.

By the way, in French it is /nee-kohl/, not /nee-ko-lah/.  In England, Nicole was much less popular than Nicola.

The other poster must be talking about Nicholas (prn. /nee-koh-lah/).

  8. It probably is quite common in France considering Nicole is a French Name. However, if you like it then go for it - it really doesn't matter how common, or uncommon, a name is, just as long as you like it, and it suits her. I think that Nicole is a gorgeous name. Nicole means Victory of her People.

    Hope this helps
