When speaking about books, what is an "advance"? How much of an "advance" might a first time author expect? And, what is the average percentage an author might expect when they write a book - royalties?

  1. I cannot quote numbers but an advance is money given to you before you have actually written or finished a manuscript.  It's like a "deposit" on your work.  The amount you are paid will depend greatly on the projected popularity of the book.
