Why should I be conservative at home and at work by turning off lights when I'm not using them, etc. when I notice that there is a BLATANT disregard for energy conservation in other places.....For instance, have you ever been to a professional sporting event?? Ever noticed how many thousands and thousands of lights are on in the stadium? Ever been to Las Vegas on the strip? Times Square in NYC?

Why does the burden of conservation fall on us little guys?

BTW - I do conserve engery at home and at work....I am simply asking the question.

  1. Think of all the people who have homes like you. All the power that it takes to light bulbs, all at one time. That's more power than all the lights in las vegas combined.

Now think if everyone turned off lights when they weren't being used. That's a lot of power that would be saved. Right? Do your part. It's not hard or inconvienent to turn off a light when you're not in the room.

  2. Because every little bit counts.  It all adds up to a lot of conservation of energy in the end, and it saves you money.  Besides, even big companies are starting to make big changes.  Like the Johnson & Johnson factory that is being run completely by converting methane gas from a landfill into electricity.  There are Walmarts that have made big changes as well.  The ones I shop at have skylights lighting the store during the day.  We have to start somewhere, and the only true control we have is of our own actions.

Look at what a long way recycling has come.  I started saving glass and metal back in the late 1980's, when there was no place to take them!  I knew they were recyclable though, so I saved them until I could find someplace to take them.  Eventually (in 1991), I found out about a volunteer recycling collection place that was only open on Saturdays or Sundays to drop off my things and then became a volunteer myself.  A couple of years later, the city I lived in finally started picking up recycling at the curb.  Now, recycling is picked up at the curb almost everywhere!

The point is, everything starts with a first step by one person who wants to make a difference, so keep doing Your part to make a difference -- and thank you for caring and taking action!

  3. Those stadium lights are more expensive than they used to be- the use of high-efficiency lighting is mandated in some cities, so yeah, they're conserving, in the sense that they're paying, too, to use more efficient lighting that wastes less juice.

Plus, if everyone reduced their home energy consumption, this would include the people who own the stadiums.

  4. why should you conserve at home and work?  Gee thats a toughy.

1.) Every person making their small contribution makes a big difference on the environment.

2.) Because you'll save money too!

  5. I'm glad you conserve. Keep it up. We all must conserve and continue to conserve. If we did not conserve the earth will run out of fossil fuel faster and energy prices will rise at an alarming rate. If we all did not conserve our electric bill would be 2 or 3 times what they are now. Don't believe, look at what has happened to gas prices. I remember not too long ago we were paying 2.25 per gallon of gas.

We need to keep conserving and encouraging companies to conserve. Everyday we must conserve and keep the message out there - Everyone and Every Company Needs To Converse Energy.

  6. Governments and corporations do not have consciences; individuals do. Governments and corporations do not make value decisions; individuals do.

My point is that little guys bear the burden because little guys have consciences and I would further say that we should be watchful over them.

  7. If you can`t beat them, join them. Thats what I do!

  8. And especially when the environmental champions like Al Gore burn enough fossil fuel to keep 277 regular American homes running for a whole year.  That doesn't even include his private jet and limos!  Oh yea, I guess it's ok, he does buy carbon credits from himself.  Perhaps I'll skip the conservation too and sell myself some carbon credits.

  9. i lived in Vegas and for what they pay a very small amount and for the revenue they produce they can afford no income taxes in Nevada for the working stiff and those on retirement.

If you have an apartment within 1000 feet of a casino there your charged the same as that casino for your electricity. costs about 85 dollars a month with every thing on twenty four seven three sixty five and I mean every thing burning.

  10. I think we should conserve more fuel , not less fuel. Change to domestic energy ,avoid arab energy.
