I learned a lot in 2010 – Nico Hulkenberg
Nico Hulkenberg began his rookie season with one of the most reliable and well known teams, Williams, and it seems that he was the only rookie to score something big.
Nico scored a pole position in his very first year in dry conditions, at the legendary Interlagos track. The German driver made his mark and proved that he is not in the sport to score average results, as he took pole position after being almost a whole second faster than the top running drivers.
However, Nico was unable to perform consistently but that is not a big problem for a rookie driver, since this is his first year and giving a consistent and fast performance race after race is not an easy task.
“It was also a very long and difficult season, especially the first eight races. The low point was in Shanghai and Istanbul where we weren’t competitive at all”, said Nico.
After he was informed that he won’t be a part of Williams for 2011, the young German is still confident that he will be able to secure a seat, in one of the next seasons.
“I realized quickly through my team mate Rubens Barrichello how important it is to have experience in this sport. Rubens was the strongest team mate I ever had and I am very pleased with the year at his side. He helped me with my development”, he added.
He believes that racing alongside Rubens Barrichello was like a dream come true and he hopes that Rubens stays in the sport for a long time.
“I’m still sure that I [will] stay in F1 in 2011. I still do not have a new contract with another team, but that will hopefully change very soon. It looks well”.
Nico enjoyed his time in the sport and said that the feeling of driving a Formula 1 car can’t be described in anyway. Stepping into Formula 1 after winning the GP2 championship was a huge step but he is confident that he will be back once again, in 2011 to perform at his best and learn even more. The rookie German finished in 14th place in the drivers’ standings, with 22 points, while his teammate Rubens Barrichello finished in 10th place with 47 points.
