I´m backpacking so any advice on extremely clean but cheap hostels would be good. I´m a photographer so need to know where´s beautiful. Where´s good to eat? (and again che4ap because I´m almost broke!) and any general advice would be hugely appreciated because I´m pretty nervous. I´ve traveled a lot, but not in Asia and worried about the culture shock. Thanks

  1. in bangkok check out the palace and the giant Buddha. If you can, travel to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan

  2. How much per night do you want to spend for your hotel room?  If you plan on staying in really cheap places you might as well guard your camera gear and other valuables 24/7 - security in really cheap places is not as good a hotel where you can use a safety box for storing valuables!  If something of value comes up missing from your hotel room or hostel bunk room it could be a fellow backpacker who stole your stuff!

Spend a few days in Bangkok, take some tours, see the city and get used to the heat and time changes.  You can get tours through travel agencies who have a list of tours for you to choose from.  Add Chiang Mai to your list of places to visit, women seem to like that area.

Here are some links for hotels and hostels, if we knew your nightly budget you can get some specific recommendations. Cheap is a relative term, to me it means something $25 US a night on down.

Food is pretty cheap, if you don't know what to order at first you can always rely on good old fried rice!   Food courts in malls are pretty cheap (under 50 baht most of the time.)   And there is the old well know  McDonalds, KFC, Burger Kings and other franchises you would recognize.  You can always purchase water, bread, sliced meat in supermarkets for sandwiches, etc.

Evaluate any valuable items you have and see if you can leave some back home.  You can use a portable hard drive for saving photos or extra SD cards.  Lots of internet shops all over Thailand so you won't really need a computer.

Some helpful travel forums you can look through for additional specific information.

  4. If you come to Phuket the tourist places are all quite expensive, try to eat like a Thai and you'll really save money, Thai food isn't all hot and spicy, you can find noodles or the popular Pad Thai noodles for around 1 USD if you choose spaghetti you'll pay ten times as much!

Travel by local transport, dress sensibly, respect the Thai people and their culture and customs. Most of the Thai people speak little English but will be happy to help you with hand signals and mimes...just smile!

If you have the time to take a longtail boat to some islands, find some people to join you and you can share the costs! Come and visit me in Bon Island I'll help you find a cheap meal if you mention this Yahoo Question, look up our restaurant on the following site!! Enjoy your adventure!

Finally if there's anything general you would like to know you can e-mail me and I'll try to help you.. however I can't tell you much about Bangkok as I've spent most of my time in the South.

  5. Mahboonkroong( MBK), Chatuchak Market, Dusit, Wat Arun, Siam Square and Chao Praya River!!!

  6. I think you can find most major tourist attraction areas online and everywhere.  I will recommend a few less tourist in case you might be interested in.

    1. Thammasat University Area: In this area, you will find a few of Thai old building.  There are peaceful protest there from time to time so that can be interesting as well.

    2. Flower Market & Suankularb College:  You will get local look and picture from here.  Flower market is mostly wet and not clean but it can be interesting.  If you want some local student life picture, this can be good spot as well since this school is right next to the flower market. Wat Arun is not too far from this area either.

Eatings are very cheap in Thailand so it should not be a problem.

  7. There is nothing better than food stalls along Bangkok's streets. BBQ pork and meat balls on skewers, deep fried chicken, pancake, roti, fried noodle, noodle, Papaya Salad, and many more. The best places to find a good variety of food stalls include Vachira - Dusit (near St Gabriel College), Khao San Road, Chatuchak Market, Tong Lo, Suan Lum Night Bazaar, Soi Rang Nam, Siam Square, Pratunaam and Chinatown.

If you don't like street food or are health- and cleanliness-conscious or don't want to pay restaurant prices, try any branch of the Central department store chain. At the supermarket level there is a food court with many varieties of food just like the stalls on the street but prepared

under more hygienic conditions. You may spend a little more than at the stalls, but it's clean and the food is just as good if not better. Shopping centres like Siam Paragon, MBK amd Siam Centre also

    have food courts.

a lot of cheap hotels around Khaosan road, you can take a look at the map here http://www.discovery-thailand.com/Hotels...

(they offer discount hotels up to 75% off and accept last min booking).

Sawasdee smile inn is not bad (only USD13/night), rooms are basic and cosy.  the laundry is cheap & fast you get it back the same day if you give it to them in the morning.they have internet access there which is good, there are a lot of bars near there.the walls are thin in this hotel you can here the people next to you!!there are alot of taxi's out the fron of this hotel & they speak english a little.  Have a nice trip!
