i read the 5 people that you meet in heaven and loved it.  the last good book that i read was the glass castle by jeannete walls

Steve Erikson (not the science-fiction writer--the author I refer to wrote a novel Tours of the Black Clock, among others), Thomas Pynchon, John Barth, Donald Barthaleme, certainly Michael Chabon.  Also try any book you can find by Halldor Laxness--notably The Fish Can Sing and Independent People.
