  1. Foggy Is Right...

    Photography Isn't Cheap

    At All...

    That's Unfortunate Isn't It?

The Canon EOS 40D Is A GREAT Camera..

that's a semi-professional camera, and you're not going to be dis-satisfied with this camera, nikon and canon are great brands, but out of the two, canon is the cheapest when it comes to lenses, and accessories. The bodies are only 1/2 of the expense in photography, It's a very great camera..

However, if you just want a simple upgrade you should get a nikon d40, it's much cheaper, and is a starter DSLR you could learn the ropes before you make such a big investment.

  2. The canon 40d is a step above the Xsi, but it's not a 'pro' cam, it's a semi-pro body, period end of story. Yes it is a fine camera, but I think the person asking wants to stay under a grand. With possible tax or shipping depending on how or where you buy, that could be a tight fit. And then you have to buy glass and memory.

If you don't consider yourself a serious amateur, moving on to a working photographer, maybe the Canon XS coming next month about 699 or the XSi about 8 hundred would be a better fit.  Skip the Xti, it's an old generation model.

  3. He is right about the price at bhphoto.com. But he is so wrong about the XSi. The 40D is a class above the XSi. 40D is a true pro while XSi is just an advanced amateur cam. The difference is well worth. Higher ISO, lower noise, redesigned CMOS sensor, better ligth gathering cappabilities, top display, auto-focus while in LiveView, a whole lot more of custom functions, better noise reduction algorithm, the ability to shoot small RAW and RAW in combination with any size of JPEG, faster burst shooting, the optional wireless file transmiter WFT-E3A, dust- and water-sealing, larger grip, better dynamic range, these are just a few of the advantages of 40D. Check out Canon's site and see for yourself! If you have anymore questions, I'll gladly answer them, just contact me! :D

  4. Maybe you could consider the Canon Rebel XT? It's been recently discontinued, but you can still pick it up quite cheap from a few vendors trying to liquidate older merchandise. If that doesn't work, you can also find some from reliable used vendors such as http://www.keh.com (Which warranties the items they sell and has an accurate rating system). I can't think of a single limitation that you absolutely can't work around having the XT instead of the 40D, with the exception of the build quality. It's plastic, good plastic, but plastic regardless, if you can live with that, get it. It's also smaller, lighter, and 1/3 the price. Yeah, liveview modes can be nice in studio settings, but for most situations, your viewfinder is always going to be the better choice. Yeah, it shoots faster, but most people can get along just fine with 3 frames per second. Yeah, it has more megapixels, but those are just arbitrary numbers past 6mp or so anyways. The autofocus is more advanced on the 40D too. From my experience, most of these things mean absolutely, positively nothing to the average photographer. Yeah, there are some nicer things on the 40D, that's why it's more expensive, but the XT should serve you just fine.

There's going to be a lot of people that tell you that the XT is not a professional-quality camera, and that it's just for the consumer. Same can be said for the other Rebel series (all of which are very nice). I have to disagree with that, though. To me, the Rebel XT is just as much of a "Professional" camera as some of the higher-end gear because I've made a profit using it. Likewise, my plastic, $30 Holga camera is a "Professional" camera because I've made a profit from it. The nine inches behind your camera are what will decide the quality of your pictures, and after that, it'll be the glass in front of it. From a technical standpoint, I cannot think of a single picture that the XT is physically incapable to taking that the 40D can. Likewise, if you were to give a pro photographer the XT, they could still take a beautiful, awe-inspiring photograph. As for the age of the camera, as long as it's in decent condition, a good camera from three years ago is still a good camera.

If you really like the XXD series, another option would be to look for a used (or new in box) 20D or 30D. Ebay, KEH, and http://www.bhphotovideo.com may have these from time to time, and they truly are superb cameras.

  5. You can use pricegrabber to search for the lowest price for the canon 40D.

  6. Photography is not a cheap hobby...

I've seen the Canon 40D (body only) for just under $1000 at http://adorama.com and at http://bhphotovideo.com ... you could supplement it with the Canon EF 50mm f1.8 lens for another $90.00.  That and a 2gb or 4gb CF card would get you off to an inexpensive start with that particular camera.

Another option, with many of the same features as the 40D is the Canon XSi .. it's a smaller camera, and takes the SD card rather than the CF card.  With lens it's under $900.

  7. unless you reallllllly need a studio flash socket, 6fps burst and spot metering then go for the more compact, higher resolution xsi, which is also in budget and has a better live view mode.
