I like to know what are the duties performed by a trooper ? I live in florida. I would like to work for the FHP. I'm sure troopers don't simply patrol highways and state roads. Beside that what else they do on a weekly/monthly basis ? And when they make an arrest: do they take the individual to the county jail(where the arrest is made) or they take him/her to the a state correction facility ? ANd also I'm going to a meeting regarding joining their auxiliary program. Would someone elaborate for me on their duties, training (+areas and period of training) Will that benefit me in an application for any other local/county agency

  1. Troopers are primarily responsible for traffic safety, so they do spend a lot of time on patrol. They also are responsible for motor carrier safety, so they operate weigh stations and do safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles.

Anyone who is arrested it taken to the county jail. A state correctional facility is only for those already convicted.

I can't speak on direct knowledge for Florida, but myself, along with several other ex-troopers I know in Wisconsin, had no problems finding employment with other agencies.

The duties and training for the auxiliary will be determined by the department, so that could be different than it is in my area. Here, they are only observers and do not have any direct contact or interaction with citizens when enforcement action is taken.

  2. Troopers do mostly patrol the highways and give out tickets, but they also respond to accidents, assist other police agencies (such as in a chase), do checkpoints, and other things. They keep busy, but expect to be in your cruiser most of the time.

As for arrests, I am not sure, but the county jail is the first stop for most arrested people.

  3. state patrols do alot more than just patroling.  What I would recommend is an internship with them if your in school or even a ride along if they do them, that way you can see for yourself what they do/deal with.  Good luck.
