School of Computer and Systems Sciences

Ever since its inception in 1974, this School has been trying to meet the computing needs of different Schools in JNU and offering specially designed courses for their students.

The teaching is specially designed to integrate inputs from statistics, operations research, algebra and combinatories, digital electronics, systems software, artificial intelligence, computer architecture and programming languages. A training and placement cell has beenset up at the School to maintain liason with various government and industrial organizations to facilitate employment for the students.

The various programmes offered in the School of Computer and System Sciences are M.C.A. (6semesters), M.Tech. (3 semesters) and Ph.D. These courses are designed to provide the necessary theoretical background and practical experience in Computer Science and Applications, to meet the growing manpower requirements of the Global Software Industry.

After the completion of the course, the students are fully competent to enter the Global IT- world as well as the fields of Research & Development at prestigious institutions in India and abroad.

The admission to M.Tech programme is based on an All India Examination , conducted by the University at different centres spread all over the country, followed by an extensive interview. On an average 25 students for M.Tech. are selected every year. On an average 30 students for M.C.A. are selected. These students are selected from about 12,000 applicants appearing for the Entrance Examination. This makes the success rate of getting through as tough as I in every 400 applicants. The last semester for M.C.A. course is meant for an Industrial Project, where as, each M.Tech. student has to work in the chosen field under the guidance of a Professor and has to submit a dissertation at the end of the third semester.

The courses in the School are well organized to provide a wide spectrum of choices to the students. The faculty and the students interests include a wide area of Computer's Database Systems, Artificial Intelligence,Computer Networks & Distributed Computining:, Numerical Analysis, Computer Graphics, Mathematical Modeling, Statistical Methods, Optimization Techniques (Operational Research),OOPS, Advanced DBMS (OODBMS, Distributed DBMS etc.), Software Engeering etc.

Optional courses allow the students to choose a particular field according to their areas of interest. The students here undergo an intensive training on the latest and the stand alone PCs and workstations, which, coupled with the best possible faculty, provides an ideal platform for bringing out excellent professional software developers, IT-managers, and computer engineers for the IT-industry.

The School offers MC.A.and M.Tech programmes.
