I live in America and I am looking int adopting my niece from Canada. I need help finding information on this.

We live in Michigan. And it will be an international adoption but a family adoption and I can only find information on one or another.

  1. Adoptions in Canada are governed by provincial law.

    You need to get a lawyer who specializes in family law in the province where your niece lives to advise you on the process.

    If you are a US citizen, you also have to go through the same process as anyone else - if the child is under age 16, apply to US CIS with an I-600a and go through their requirements to bring her in as a US citizen. If she is 16 or older, she will come in as a "resident alien" and will have to go thru the regular citizenship process if she wants - many Canadians don't bother.

    If you are not a US citizen, and live in Michigan on a "green card,", you would apply to have your new daughter come under that green card.
