  1. I'm a Canadian at a Canadian university. I don't think American employers are going to spit at your Canadian degree - from my experience it's more the other way around. A lot of Canadian employers look for "Canadian experience" only - there's a stereotype of foreign doctors driving taxicabs in Ontario (Canada not California!) and it's often true. But if you want to experience life in a foreign country or just want a change of pace from California, then Canada could be an option.

Canadian universities admit differently than most US schools - they look mostly at your marks and only take extracurriculars as a minor consideration (sometimes not at all). They don't require SATs (at least for Canadian applicants. Also rather than admitting to the entire school, universities admit by faculty (i.e. arts vs. science vs. engineering, etc.) or even by a specific major. My university (University of Waterloo) for example admits some students by very specific majors in which almost all of their courses are decided and they're expected to stick with that program for 4 years. This means that students may not have as much flexibility in deciding what they want to do while in university, but also generally don't have to put up with the rigid "core curriculums" many US universities have.

Also note that "colleges" in Canada are different from "colleges" in the US. Colleges in Canada are like community colleges in the US except they usually have admission requirements rather than admit everyone. They offer 2-year and 3-year "diplomas" comparable to an Associate's in the US and in more applied subjects. Occasionally they offer a "degree" in an applied subject but that's rare. "Universities" are the 4-year colleges in the US and offer Bachelor's degrees (some also have a 3-year "general" Bachelor's degree).

Keep in mind the reaction some Canadians have towards Americans (unfortunately) - if you open up a Canadian university's student newspaper you'll likely see tons of anti-American "articles" - often they're political but there's also the typical "why Canadians are better than Americans" sort of thing. Also Canadian universities culturally don't have the tradition of cheering for their sports teams the way big American universities (not to say there aren't sports and fans but not to the extent of the Americans) or much of a frat/sorority system the Americans have.

  2. yes if you're going to stay in canada. no if you're planning on moving back to the u.s

ignorant americans will spit at you and put you down if they find out you went to a school here in canada because supposedly our education isn't as good as theirs.

but on the plus side, people are much, much, much nicer here. :)
