Do I need to keep my plates? I´m not going to buy another car. How do I transfer the title?

Do I have to do anything else?

Thanks!

  1. Don't forget to send in a release of liability, in case the buyer does not register it in a reasonable time. This tells the state that you have no interest in the vehicle. Keep a second bill of sale for yourself.

  2. be sure to save a copy of the title for your records and write down the name and driversliscense # of the person you sold t t o with the date. This may sound rediculous but as a former Illinoisian I knw what I'm talking about. Make sure you take the liscense plates off before they take the car.

  3. Collect the cash or certified funds, sign the certificate of title over to the buyer, hand it to him with the keys...and wish him good luck.

Keep your plates, check with DMV, in some states you need to turn them in to them, rather than hold them.
