Sometimes picking something like that is a personal preference.  Dark rosin is more sticky and are used in cooler climates.  Light rosin is less sticky and is more preferably for the higher strings.  You should probably go with light rosin since you're a violinist.  Try a few and see what you like, if you get sounds you don't like (whistling and the like) then use another brand of rosin or another type.  There's more than just light or dark, you can try jade rosin which I think is quite nice.  Just try them as they fit your style.  If you're a student then you'll probably just want to buy one kind and that would be the light.  When you want to get more serious then try a variety of rosins.
