  1. Move to Nebraska!  :)

  2. Nothing you can do in apartments aside from keep yourself updated on the news and know where your local shelters are at.

  3. im in the same boat your in. st. pete, FL here. the best thing you can do is to go to publix and pick up a hurricane guide. it's free. it will tell you what supplies to pick up in case of a storm. evacuation routes are also enclosed. if you want to know about boarding up windows, ask your complex manager. they will also go through the steps with you in the event of a hurricane situation.

  4. As a life long resident here in the Sunshine State, the only thing you can do is pay attention to the Miami Hurricane center's news and information.  Prepare as needed with boarding up windows, getting/storing water, or evacuating when advised to do so.  There are many sites to look at from your local TV stations to the NOAA [ http://www.noaa.gov ] site that can give you ideas and recommendations for being prepared.  Regarding your particular complex, you'd need to consult a structural engineer to see just how well it was built.  I have been fortunate and the worst I have ever suffered has been some uprooted trees and lawn debris.  I have been through over a dozen in my lifetime, and the house I grew up in is less than a mile from the beach.   But, it  had been built in 1903--when they knew how to build houses.

As far as moving to another state, there's really nowhere else safe from some sort of natural disaster either: blizzards, tornadoes, earthquakes, wildfires etc.  Every place has their problems.  At least with a hurricane you get some advanced warning it's out there and possibly headed towards you.
