  1. You might find the site listed below helpful.

101 Ways to Research Your Family Tree for Free

Alternatives to Pay-For-Use Genealogy Sites on the Internet

Is free genealogy a thing of the past? With the constant addition of subscription genealogy databases on the Internet, people often wonder if there will soon be an end to free genealogy research via the Web. For those of you with this concern, take heart - free genealogy databases aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Web sites from all over the world contain free genealogy information of use to family tree researchers which has been contributed by individuals, companies and even governments. Birth records, marriage records, military records, ships passenger lists, surnames, census records, immigration records, wills, photos and much, much more are available on the Internet for FREE if you just know where to look. These 100 free genealogy sites, in no particular order, should keep you busy searching for weeks!

  2. For family tree, try:

You should start by asking all your living relatives about family history.  Then, armed with that information, you can go to your public library and check to see if it has a genealogy department.  Most do nowadays; also, don't forget to check at community colleges, universities, etc.  Our public library has both www.ancestry.com and www.heritagequest.com free for anyone to use (no library card required).

Another place to check out is any of the Mormon's Family History Centers.  They allow people to search for their family history (and, NO, they don't try to convert you).

A third option is one of the following websites:

    http://www.searchforancestors.com/...

    http://www.censusrecords.net/?o_xid=2739...

    www dot usgenweb dot com/

    http://www.census.gov/

    http://www.rootsweb.com/

    www dot ukgenweb dot com/

    http://www.archives.gov/

    www dot familysearch dot org/

    http://www.accessgenealogy.com/...

    http://www.cyndislist.com/

    www dot geni dot com/

Cyndi's has the most links to genealogy websites, whether ship's passenger lists, ancestors from Africa, ancestors from the Philippines, where ever and whatever.

Of course, you may be successful by googling: "john doe, born 1620, plimouth, massachusetts" as an example.

    Good luck and have fun!

Check out this article on five great free genealogy websites:

Then there is the DNA test; if you decide you want to REALLY know where your ancestors came from opt for the DNA test. Besides all the mistakes that officials commonly make, from 10% to 20% of birth certificates list the father wrong; that is, mama was doing the hanky-panky and someone else was the REAL father. That won't show up on the internet or in books; it WILL show up in DNA.

I used www.familytreedna.com which works with the National Geographics Genotype Program.

  3. A one year subscription to a genealogy web site is far less expensive than the cost of gas, a motel for 2 or 3 nights and meals, in order to research my family history in my dad's hometown for one week-end.

Plus, I don't have to drive 4 hours to get there!

Twenty-five years ago, I purchased 5 rolls of Census films and donated them to our public library. The cost of those rolls is equal to half of  this years subscription to ancestry.com.

My husband has renewed my membership for the past 2 years, and is greatly relieved not to have to go shopping for my birthday gift.

Each genealogy site has a tutorial, which is easy to follow.

You will gather more info in one day at any of these sites, than you will, posting one question at a time, here.

ancestry.com has the 1790-1930 Census Records (which are printable), military records (Revolutionary War, Civil War, WW I, WW II, etc).

If the paid sites don't appeal to you, try the free ones.

familysearch.org and rootsweb.com are excellent free sites.
