Hi, I was born in London (England) and have lived here my whole life, currently I’m getting a bachelors degree in English and creative writing, this year is my final year. Anyway my boyfriend is from Dallas, TX and I plan on moving over there. I really had my mind set on becoming an elementary school teacher but I’m not sure what qualifications I’m required to have to be one. I was also planning taking a teaching degree here in London after I finish my bachelors. Would a teaching degree and bachelors degree be enough? And more importantly would they accept it since I’m got my degree from London?

Thank you

  1. You need a bachelors degree in education and teacher certification. Unfortunately in terms of recognizing degrees obtained abroad, there is not a universal policy. You will need to check with the certification authority. This website provides a lot of info and should have contacts. Get in tough with the State Board for Educator Certification via the second link.

  2. ok I've been in america 6 years now and am goign through the mess now- I'm in colorado. i work at a charter school and they have been more lenient and accepted seeing my transcripts and take me as a master teacher in math as there are so few math teachers in the area- and i'm good!

ok first of all u need to get letters of reference from all the school s uve worked at stating periods of time uve worked there- hold onto email and contact numbers cos u are going to need them. if you've worked more than 3 years u are in a pretty good situation if less u have to go through their stuff.

ok so firct of all get yr addresses of the unis u attended and their numbers.

i then applied to the World education service. my state wont accept my teachign certificates unless they go thrugh such an agency. u have to get each of yr unis/ pgce places to send the agency an academic transcript, sealed and digned ont he back to them.

i made the mistake of getting them to send it to me- and now have to repeat the process.

then even though u are certified in the uk u have ot take a subject orientated test called the praxis in yr area, i.e secondary math. yep u have to study a little.

u have to get yr finger prints taken and sent to the CBI- that takes 10-12 weeks.

the state then require you to fill out a 20 page doument get it notarized- get letters from yr schools etc. a big mess process that takes about 10 weeks

oh and the yanks really like people with masters- its easy to get extra money , a few extra thousand a year with a masters.

so i;m tryign to contact my schools in the uk- its been over 6 yeas and people have moved on and its the summer!!!!

    fun fun fun

so qualifications i would get yr teachgin degree the PGCE-  i got mine from oxford brookes and kings college has a good course,

just go through  the paperwork and u will be fine!:P

pls say hello to London from me - i'm from there too! i miss those digestive biscuits!!!!!!

  3. In the state of Tx all you need in order to become a teacher is a degree in what ever language you'll be teaching and not have a criminal record. I'm sure you have enough to become a teacher in Dallas. But most Elem. teacher teach all subjects not just one, and i don't know how it is in the U.K. but in the U.S. they dont get paid much.

Here's a cite that could help, it'll tell you what you need 2 become a teacher in the U.S.:
