Question:

I live in MN, do I HAVE to have car insurance?

My fianceé and I do not want to put my name on our policy. Due to my poor driving record, it makes a considerable difference in premium. I have a car, but I'm selling it. Do I HAVE to have car insurance. If I go without, will I have problems getting it in the future?

  1. For automobile insurance the best way to get a good rate is do a policy comparison on car policies. Make sure that you pick similar options with the same limits, car model, location, etc so that all options are a good comparison.

What I most often recommend is an internet comparison quote at http://www.InsureAutoNow.info since they have lots of insurers and can give many quotes on car insurance polices.

  2. If you're not driving you don't. However, if you drive without it and are involved in an accident, you will be in serious trouble. If MN requires 'proof of insurance' like most states, then just being stopped for a traffic violation will result in a ticket for failure to provide proof of said insurance.

  3. are you living with your fiancee?  if so then YES you have to be listed on the policy as long as you have a valid license.  the way the insurance company sees it you have access to the car and someday you will most likely drive it ("run to the store, honey", etc)  Since you are selling your car the only way to not have to be listed is if she specifically excludes you through her company (so if you ever DID drive and had an accident they WILL deny the claim) or turn in your license to the dmv until you are ready to drive again.  (this of course also means if you DID drive they will deny the claim as you are unlicensed) if you live alone with no car in the household, you do not need insurance.
