  1. Exactly what the poster said above me.  Russian sage is great.  Also purple coneflower (enchinacea) and pincushion flowers.

  2. It would be necessary to know your growing zone and soil conditions. But I will suggest some that are robust and tolerant under many conditions.

From personal experience I suggest day lilies, butterfly bush, bee balm, thyme, iris, black-eyed susan, daisies, cranesbill, and coreopsis.

Things I have also wanted to try are catmint and russian sage, I think they would be perennial for you too.

  3. Sorry but who / what / where is NE.

It's hard to provide accurate info with so little detail provided.

can you submit again advising where is NE and what sort of winters you have and your rain fall and do you want shrubs, flowers etc.It all ads to the fray for good advice answers!

  4. I'm in New England, too, and have had good luck with daisys, black eyed susans, peonies, veronica, astilbe, irises.

Lots of folks here do great with bee balm, but mine hasn't really taken (don't know why).

  5. Peonies are a great plant for your area, deer  do not like them, ants will come and drink the nectar when they get ready to bloom.  They come in a great variety of colors, just prepare the soil with some good organic matter (about 6 inches) plant the eyes 2 inches in the ground, in a nice sunny location, and you are in business.  Get several varieties so you will have continual bloom throughout the late spring and early summer.
