  1. Northern lights that are visible that far south are extremely rare.  The closer you are to the North Magnetic Pole, which is located in Nunavut, the better; I have often seen them as far south as Sudbury, Ontario but your chances would improve the further north you go.  The easiest major cities to get to for a view would be Winnipeg, Edmonton or Regina.

  4. RIGHT AFTER HARVEST. Look towards the Canadian borders.

  5. On a clear night one can see them in southern Michigan, so can you in NY.
