  1. You will not need a passport.....just yet.  Just make sure that everyone has a government issued picture ID and a birth certificate.  If there are minors crossing, a birth certificate only is needed.

  2. To add to the information in the previous answers, it is correct that a passport is not needed and that a government issued photo ID such as a driver's license and a passport is ok.  However, if you are bringing minors, and both parents will not be present, you also need a letter from any absent parent giving you permission to take that child across the border, in addition to the birth certificate.  This applies to your own children as well if both parents are named on the birth certificate and if both parents will not be present.  It is a good idea if the letter is notarized, and it should contain contact information for the absent parents.  It is also a good idea if the absent parents are available by phone when you are crossing the border in case officials want to contact them to make sure everything is ok.   Border officials on both sides are very careful about minors crossing the border without both parents.

  3. Passports are not needed for LAND travel to and from Canada until June 2009.  Now, you need a photo I.D. and a proof of citizenship...EITHER a passport OR a birth certificate.
