Beer bottles, cans, newspapers are in the landfill unless you volunteer to put those things in a separate pail.No such provision for apartment buildings.I further found out it is mostly the Blue States that Recycle.What is wrong, Red States?

  1. I moved to AZ from upstate NY and there isn't any mandatory recycling here either. It is a shame

  2. Yes, I had the same problem when I recently moved to Texas from upstate NY.   Austin, and some of the larger Texas cities here have recycling but I live on the outskirts of a smaller city.  When I called the city, and local refuse companies, to inquire about recycling- I was shocked that all I got was pass the buck politics. They couldn't even agree as to who our refuse company is-let alone provide, or encourage, recycling.  Many "Freecyclers" then responded to my inquiry/post informing me about a local "Green Guy" recycler-where locals interested in recycling could take "some" of their recyclable items...Perhaps there is one in your area???  Try this link:

    However, I agree-that is simply-NOT good enough...With our environment at a crisis level-It is deplorable that such indifference still exists.  I would encourage you to find others (other local Freecyclers is a good start) in your area to start writing letters, and spreading the word to inspire these desperately needed changes.

    Good Luck!!!

  3. Many places still don't have recycling, maybe these places need to demand that systems be put in place for it, or maybe people in those places need to put people in office who will, rather than who they've been putting in office up until now.

  4. I'm in N.C. also. Fayettville tryed that even had a plant to sort an burn burnables to resell energy, the plant closed. End of recycling.

    Jim in N.C. ==zip 28386

  5. Mandatory recycling is wrong. Our family CHOOSES to recycle, but here in MI, it's an option. What happens if you don't recycle? Do you go to recycle jail? Who exactly enforces that? Our police need to stay on REAL crime.  Perhaps the issue is that some political parties focus on the wrong things... just something to think about...

  6. It is this way in most rural states. TN has a mandatory recycling law but it only says that some type of recycling has to be available. In my county (the 5th largest in the state, just outside Nashville) we have no real recycling. Two small private companies (one guy and a guy and his wife) will pick up your recyclables if you pay them.  That's it.

    From my experience, people in Red States people are so paranoid about taxes they won't even fund schools or needed sewer plant expansions.  We have more than half our students being taught in mobile homes because we can't fund schools. (Oh but no one complains about wealthy tax breaks including 80 billion in tax cuts to oil companies which must obviously be offset by budget cuts and/or by middle class tax increases)

    Recycling costs money and so is WAAAAY down on the list around here. (sadly)

  7. I live in NC too and I am just doing what I can to recycle as much as I can and try to get as many people as I can to follow my actions. I'm trying to do what I can, and hopefully others will follow suit. =D

  8. Actually NC law does mandate aluminum recycling.

    And just about every decent-sized town has some type of residential recycling program, both for houses and apartments.
