I would like to go in the July holidays but if anyone knows of cheap weekends out of the holidays that would be great. Also any info on where we can take our camper trailer in the warmer mths would be greatly appreciated, we moved from QLD 6 mths ago so we dont know the area at all.

  1. Going to the Blue Mtns in July would be cheaper than the snow fields but the problem would be that there is no guarantee of snow. One way  way would be to stay outside the resorts and be prepared to travel a bit to the fields each day Cooma would possibly be the cheapest followed by Jindabyne

  2. Go to the Blue Mountains (Katoomba or Blackheath). You cant go skiing but there is usually enough snow for a snowball fight and to make a snowman. There is no guarantee of snow though.

Accomodation from $120-600 per night and no lift passes.

  3. Mt Selwyn would offer your family a great day out at a cheaper rate.

    Check out the website

Although there is no accomodation on the slopes, nearby towns such as Talbingo and Adaminaby (about 30-40mins drive) would offer you what you want. You will need to carry snow chains (except 4WD's) which are available for hire at service stations on the Snowy Mtns Hwy. (they will teach you how to use them) and it will cost $27 to enter the National Park/ per vehicle/ per day.

  4. I live in Katoomba, NSW and the rare occassions that it does snow here, its only light and it melts to fast. Your best to go south to Snowy Mountains and stay in Bega or Cooma and then head off into Snowy Mountains National Park.

  5. If there is snow in the July holidays, which can be doubtful, you could opt for a day trip from Canberra or any surrounding small towns south of there. Mt Selwyn as has been said is family friendly and is a lot cheaper than the other snow fields. Some times if the season is good the Brindabella Mountains that surround Canberra can get snow.

You could take your camper to the various campsites that the Snowy Mountains have even in the winter. Some are accessible all year around but check with a good camping shop or even the National Parkes and Wildlife sites.Adaminaby and both Lakes Jyndabyne and Eucumbene are fantastic in the summer months as well as the actual snowy river. There are so many areas to explore in that region as well as those around Parkes. You live in a great place although a little dry.
