Thinking of moving to central Texas, Austin or Round Rock cause I figure the more people, more people with money, people with education and money, more cars are being sold. Been in the car biz for 15 years here in Bowling Green, Ky. But I feel like economy is hitting bottom.

  1. If you want to stay in the Automotive business but are finding the retail side to be slowing you could consider working for an Auto Auction; they offer services to dealers who need to obtain or liquidate their inventory. you will find small needy auctions for aggressive salespeople about every 100 mile radius - in every state.

  2. We're in northwest GA, and I've talked to a lot of people and they're saying the same thing.. the car business is tanking, right now, but, it should go up again.. of course, the main thing is, what types of cars are you selling and so forth.

  3. no crystal ball. I'll just share these observations:  central Texas area you describe is wonderful and probably only geographical area in TX a hilltopper would be happy. however, economy sputtering. the high tech industries that drove the area economy and growth have flattened out. looking at deals offered on new cars in TV advertising makes me think auto biz is having problems.  cost of living in Austin is high, though more affordable in surrounding communities.  my opinion only-- short term probability is that  you'd have a bit of a struggle for a while.  however, there is no question that the underlying strengths of the area are solid and i think central Texas will eventually continue to grow and prosper.  i migrated from Louisville KY to Texas a few decades ago.  landed in Dallas at first.  horrible.  finally got to Austin, which i love.  the move to Texas was a major adjustment.  no glorious autumn.  modest seasonal changes throughout the year. short, mild winters, but i don't appreciate those first balmy days of spring as much. summer is hot, hot, hot.  august is a precursor  for h**l.   round rock and other communities of Williamson county (adjacent to and just north of Austin's Travis county) is more conservative...very much a law and order community. Austin is known for being laid back and more liberal than most of Texas.  football, not basketball, is king.  and ut's burnt orange is naturally the area god.  and Texans are the biggest braggers in the world.  their stuff doesn't stink.  so they think. but i still like a bunch of them anyway.  thought I'd offer this info as a former kentuckian who made the change.

  4. I've lived in different parts of central Texas all my life, and things are definitely getting bad here too. Austin's "bad" might be relatively better though compared to Kentucky's, but with the costs of travel even to get here, and the choice of either an outrageous cost of living (in Austin) or an extremely long commute (cheaper homes/taxes etc. outside the city), it may just be better to suffer in the short term and stick it out, than uproot your entire life. If you can hang on for the next year or so I'm thinking things will improve a bit. Unless you've just been looking for an excuse to move to Texas....;-) Good luck!
