The distance wont be a problem with family, since I play baseball I get first preferences on classes and I will be taking classes on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday so I will be able to come home every week I would like too. During the winter at least

  1. southern school are a bit better in sports, sec for example, and academics too

  2. It depends on your independence (there are some students who eagerly wait for the weekends to head home and there are others whose parents are lucky if their kid comes home at all).  That being said, if you are close to your family, then L.A. might be the better choice.  Conversely, if you're okay with being away from them for an extended period, then NY might be the city.  Also, climates are very different in both areas.

Southern California is dry but warm year round.  You can hit the beach in the morning and, later in the day, be up in the mountains skiing.  The cons are the lack of seasons and bad traffic.

New York, obviously, is much colder in the winter and if you're not partial to snow, then it might not be a good choice.  If you're thinking of colleges in NY City, then you don't have to worry about transportation (whereas in L.A., you'd need a car).  New York City has an active night life (in L.A. not as much) and there are tons of museums and shows.

Also, since you're playing baseball, won't weather be a factor?  Do the NY schools have indoor fields for their teams?  (In L.A., that shouldn't be a problem.)

Either way, both cities are amazing and I don't think you'll go wrong regardless of what city you choose.  Good luck.
