I live in an apartment, what can I do to be Eco-friendly?

Should I spend my own money and buy a low flow showerhead? I also would like to grow some vegetables in my apartment in a few clay pots? I thought of growing tomatoes and maybe lettuce. Are clay pots safe? Could there be lead in clay pots? What sort of a small container would be safe to grow a few plants in?

  1. I also live in an apartment and here is a couple things I started doing.

    Wash cloths in cold water.

Turn the water off when brushing your teeth.

Buy concentrated laundry detergent and other products. (less plastic)

Invest in water bottles and jugs you can wash. (Once you have a few stop buying bottled water.)

Buy some reusable bags for grocery shopping. (Some stores give a discount if you bring your own bag.)

  2. as well as growing veg where possible, using minimum energy and water resources, there's also just how you live

    eg -

    - instead of throwing food (leftovers, peel etc) away, compost it (eg http://www.wigglywigglers.co.uk/shop/fou...

    - recycle everything, try not to buy things with a lot of packaging

    - buy local - food and veg produced in your own country, rather than flown across the world

    - use public transport rather than drive (if applicable)

    - reuse things rather than throw them out. join your local freecycle group (http://www.freecycle.org) to get rid of stuff you don't want, and see what other people have to offer

  3. There are some really simple things you can do that can be eco-friendly AND decorate your apartment at the same time!

One simple things is to grow herbs, vegetables and flowers in pot plants and place them around your house. You can get clay ones then you could spend an afternoon painting the clay pots with pretty designs.

You don't need to use all your money on a shower head- just simply reduce your shower times! And if you take long shows, maybe you should cut down on some other things you do that wastes water.

And last, make your place a safe environment that doesn't use too much energy. This is as easy as turning off ligths your not using, turning off power points and reducing the time you watch tv- maybe instead you could read a book or a magazine!

  4. Hi, Along with some of the other good ideals that you have been given here. You can use compact fluorescent bulbs. In the winter you can open the curtains and let the sun warm your apartment. In the summer close the curtains so the sun doesn't over heat your apartment. These suggestion will also save you some money as well.
