  1. You've possibly already thought of Poland.  I liked it and would like to have stayed longer. It was also affordable.  Go there; it's right next door.

  2. I used to live in Italy in the 1980's while stationed in the US Air Force. I really LOVED it there and really considered retiring there. There are a few American military bases in Norhtern Italy and quite a few reitred military folks there as well. When i was there the Italian Lira was worth slightly LESS than the US Dollar....but still very manageable. Gorgeous women, great foods and cheap wines. I think that you are probably about 12 hours drive from southern Germany....but once you got settled in you won't want to leave. We drove to Garmish-Partschengarten several times to go skiing, and loved the drive also.If you are retired military you can also use the base facilities such as the BX or PX, commissary and other services.

  3. Have you thought about the Baltic republics, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania?

If you are not too far south they will be close enough for a visit, although it will take more than 4 hours to get there.

Czech republic is still on its own currency and the prices are still much lower than in the west, except Prague, Slovakia, next door, will change to the Euro next January, but it will take much longer till the prices are as high as in the west, (except for Bratislava and the mountain resorts.)

And as already said, Poland should be a good destination too.

  4. well, I am from romania and I've been to germany by car once and it wasn't too bad but it takes more than 4h to get here, actually it takes like a day, depends on how fast you like to drive and where exactly you want to go.

I think a dollar is about 2.3 lei now, which is very good,a euro is about 3.5. So, consider it. I think it's the closest place without the euro, although, I guess you could try Hungary too

  5. I heard Bulgaria is beautiful and not that expensive. Also look into Rumania or Croatia.

  6. Don't mind Michael K, Italy is also expensive.

Lose the American mentality and embrace the true cost of living, my friend. You'll be glad you surrendered yourself.
