  1. One thing you might want to look for is a "Volkshochschule" (VHS). It is a type of community school which will have German language classes for all levels, including beginners. In addition to learning German, you will be able to meet some other people, foreigners of course. Also, you may find that a nearby VHS needs some English teachers. You may be able to look into doing that, depending upon your work permit.

  2. Hi I used to live in Hanau, Germany (which is about a 1/2 hour from Frankfurt and the home of the infamous Grimm's Brothers). You shouldn't have too many problems meeting people or learning German because there are many Americans over there (serving in the military, etc) and also most Germans know enough English to help you out. Considering that there are so many people that know English there, you should have no problem meeting friends who can also teach you German. Many jobs over there look for people who know both languages so perhaps in the meantime you can get one of those audio cd's and begin learning or once you get there search around and find someone who might know some classes that you could take.I don't know how possible it is but you might be able to find work on one of the American posts too. I lived there for about three years and it is truly a beautiful country. If I had the opportunity I would gladly move back there so I am sure that you will have a great experience. Good luck and try to see as much as you can...
