No. You don't have to take it but it will help with your insurance rates.

Many states require driver's ed.  Even if you don't have a problem now in NC, you will if you ever move.  Also, it will help lower your car insurance rates, and many insurance companies will not insure anyone under 25 unless they have taken an approved driver's ed program.

Learning Permit Age: 15

Restricted License: 16

Full License: 16.5

Driver's Ed Req: No

Additional Restrictions: Restricted license drivers may not drive between 9:00 pm and 5:00 pm

So at 18 years of age you will not need to take drivers ed.
