  1. With the high price of scrap, the railroad I work for is cutting up their old obsolete and damaged cars as fast as they can.

Contact each railroad directly, the person answering the phoine can direct you to the person in charge of disposal.

You will have to pay at least scrap value but they are out there, I see them being moved once in awhile, around here especially old grain cars, farmers just set them on concrete footings and have an instant grain storage facility.

  2. Aside from railroads of every size, try leasing companies such as TTX.    I understand the Concord naval weapons station also has great piles of boxcars, but they have old-style bearings, which means they'll need to be hauled off by truck.  If you buy a roller bearing car less than 50 years old, that can be shipped by rail to a siding near you.

If you need to truck the boxcar any distance (say, you get a Concord one), you'll want a company that specializes in same.  One such company is Silk Road Transport http://www.silkroadtrans.com/ which despite being out east has done many jobs in the Bay Area.
