I have been eating them since I was 8yo with no ill effects. They bloom at high altitude. I believe they have 5 points on a leaf. The leaves are big and wide. The plant only grows to waste height at the most. It's leaves are very soft to the touch but splintery on soft skin. We always called them red caps and I was shocked when I couldn't find them on google images. they kinda look like rasberries but are cup shaped and very soft. 10 points to the first image link!!!

  1. Could they be Thimbleberries?

  2. He beat me too it!  But I'd say thimbleberries too.  Have a great nutty flavor?  They are closely related to raspberries.  One of my favorites when I'm in the redwood forest.

But 'redcaps' is a name for Amanita muscaria, 'shroom used for flying.  Tastee, but very different.
