I live in southwest Michigan, where are the best spots to find Morel Mushrooms? Did the season just start?

I found 3 good sized ones near a pine tree in my yard so I know there must be more! Is this the ideal time for my climate (souhtwest Michigan)? I know that Morel hunting is huge up in Northern Michigan! So what types of trees do they tend to be by? And what's the best way to eat Morels? And lastly, where can you sell them if you find a lot? THANKS!

  1. apple pine and alder.

  2. Jenna,

It depends upon what color they were.  First morels are black or dark brown then lighter and finally a taller white. The darker ones come out first. Trees will vary, The Detroit News had a recent article about finding them under elm trees. I've heard about in apple orchards, and poplar trees.  Most of those I've found were in areas with ferns (moist) and dead leaves.

I believe the ideal time has past in lower Michigan for the darker varieties.

Many of the more expensive restaurants might purchase your morels.
