Does a lemon tree need direct sunlight, or can it grow well with filtered light. I would like to plant it in a small backyard which gets 4 hours of direct sunlight at noon and the rest is filtered light. The light is filtered by a coast live oak.

  1. well, it should get a little more than that, but what do you mean by filtered. If you can hold your hand out and still see a distinct shadow, you might get away with it. You can always keep dwarf trees in a container that can be moved to optimize the light as the seasons change. The link is my fave for dwarf citrus questions.

  2. The tree should have a bit more light; however, if that is the only place you can put it then it can't be helped.  Your tree will not grow as fast as it would if it were in direct sunlight.  Just make sure to water it regularly and thoroughly so the live oak won't steal all the water.

  3. Needs more!
