I'm driving across the US this summer and so I'm going to be withdrawing money all the while I'm there.

What is the best way to get my money while I'm out there?

Can I set up a US bank account in advance so I don't have to get charged everytime I take my money out abroad?

Should I use travellers cheques?

I'm asking because I'm very keen not to carry large sums around with me, just to avoid paying a certain amount each transaction I make.

  1. Your best bet is your ATM card. Visa or Master Card branded cards work in most American ATMs. (Look for a Plus or Cirrus logo.) Travellers checks are definitely second best. The only kind I'd suggest are American Express checks in US dollars, and even those are not as easy to cash as they used to be. Also keep in mind that you can pay for most things in the US with cards, so you may not need as much cash as you thought.

I generally wouldn't bother trying to set up a US bank account, more hassle than it's worth, although if you bank with HSBC you might ask your bank how hard it'd be to open an account with their US affiliate.

  2. The nice thing about travelers cheques is they require your signature before you spend them. Take what you need but never, never, sign them before you need to.

  3. The best way is to use your ATM card. It  is a good idea to call the customer service number on the card and let them know you will be in the U.S. .for certain dates.  travellers checks are a pain in the rear to cash in many places., but you may want to bring some...or a second ATM card. The thing is...if you have only ONE source to get money, like your ATM crd, and you lose it or it is swallowed by a machine...you are stuck.  I have seen this happen.  it is good to have 2 wys to acess your money.  As to setting up a U.S. acccount, I do not believe you can without a U.S. address.  But, you can ask your bank if they are partnered with any U.S. banks, or open an acc't with a bank that is.  I am American, but live in Mexico.  I have accounts with 2 banks in the states that have partner banks in Mexico so I can use my  ATM cards.  Hope you have a geat time.
